Grappenhall Sports F.C. 1-1 Billinge F.C.

11:31pm Sunday 19th February 2012

A couple of debuts were being made with Joe Alexander signed from Pilkington F.C. and Dale Newbrook recently signed from St. Helens Town F.C.

The game started with Billinge on the attack and immediately had the home team penned in their own half, they were looking dangerous particularly down the left flank. The first goal came on the 14h minute when Murphy’s pace surprised the keeper who arrived for the challenge fractionally late and ended up taking Murphy down for a penalty. Up stepped Webb to smash the ball into the top corner to give Billinge a deserved lead.

Despite the pressure few clear chances were made the best falling to Murphy who saw his shot just clear the far post with the keeper stranded. As the half progressed Grappenhall got themselves back into the game and created a couple of chances of their own particularly from set plays where they did look dangerous. As the second half started even though Grappenhall had the wind advantage Billinge still looked dangerous and the most likely to extend their lead. On the hour Alexander gave away a foul 25 yards from goal, the free kick was heading towards the bottom corner Newbrook dived to his left to parry the shot but the Grappenhall striker reacted first and slid the ball home from an acute angle.

In the final 10 minutes the Grappenhall defence was breached twice on both occasions Sean Homer was clean through on goal with just the keeper to beat but on both occasions the goal keeper was up to the challenge and made two good saves.
